Hollaback Accumulative Video Project
This is a video of the Hollaback Accumulative Video Project as it is exhibited at The Playhouse Gallery, University of London Union on 16/11/13. Here the video has only 5 submissions and is displayed projected onto a wall streamed live from the webpage. As more submissions are added the video will change. Currently it is very repetitive, mirroring its subject matter, but due to the random manner in which each submission appears on the loop, a rhythm is not established - thus the video remains unpredictable and jarring. As more submissions are added, an insight into how widespread, constant and relentless harassment is will be established.
I’m curious about the effect of watching harassment be repeated by the mouths of those who have experienced it. Phrases that have become so normalised coming from the mouths of harassers, become strange in the mouths of the harassed - particularly when repeated.
The filming of just the mouth means those submitting films retain their anonymity, whilst at the same time it remains personal. Statistics can be dehumanised, here each submission is from an individual. Anonymity however, remains essential in this difficult subject matter that might be triggering or unsafe for some individuals.
That the submissions are filmed and uploaded by each individual is an important part of the process. They control the gaze of the camera on themselves contrasting with the lack of control we have over the gaze of harassers.
To contribute to the project, upload a short video clip of your mouth repeating harassment (as defined by you) that you have experienced. We encourage contributions in any language, from any person. Submissions will be moderated only to ensure the project is not trolled horribly.
